Sustainability Day is the 4th Wednesday of October
HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - Huntsville International Airport is sharing the recently adopted Sustainability Management Plan (SMP) today, on International Sustainability Day. International Sustainability Day was organized in 2009 with the United Nations Non-Government Liason Service (UNNGLS) as a commemorative day of climate action. It has since been celebrated on the fourth Wednesday of October. Huntsville International Airport felt it fitting to release their Sustainability Management Plan, which defines the sustainability objectives of the Port of Huntsville on this day because it includes using energy and water efficient technologies, investing in employees and communities and using responsible waste management strategies. The plan also establishes specific actions that will be taken to achieve these objectives.
“Huntsville International Airport serves the third most populous city in Alabama, providing transportation connections to the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, U.S. Army Redstone Arsenal and many other international companies,” said Huntsville International Airport Executive Director Rick Tucker. “Our Sustainability Management Plan demonstrates our commitment to helping the City of Huntsville, Madison County and the region as a whole to meet their long-standing commitment to provide a safe and efficient airport for citizens that will also serve to promote long term economic growth.”
Huntsville International Airport’s Sustainability Management Plan aligns with the FAA’s Sustainability Master Plan Program, Airport Council International- North America (ACI-NA) and regional sustainability efforts. The airport worked with consultant, Leigh Fisher, to review current airport operations, maintenance and construction to understand HSV’s baseline conditions. The Port of Huntsville paid particular attention to opportunities to reduce the use and cost of energy. This process included collecting, reviewing and analyzing energy data to provide over 100 energy efficiency measures to enhance the energy independence and sustainability at HSV. The airport prioritized energy efficiency measures for implementation to maximize the energy savings benefits.
As a part of the plan, the Port of Huntsville identified six focus areas- Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy & Emissions Reductions, Waste Reduction, Water Efficiency, Supporting our Community and Planning for the Future. These areas will guide the plan to address all aspects of the airport, environment and community. This ensures that sustainability considers not only the air, land and water, but also includes the airport’s impact on the region’s residents and employees.
Huntsville International Airport has posted the full Sustainability Management Plan on FlyHuntsville.com and encourages customers and community partners to review the plan and then provide feedback about opportunities for HSV to engage with the local community through partnerships and philanthropy since “Supporting our Community” is a specific focus area for the SMP. HSV will also be sharing energy efficient event partnerships and parts of the plan as they are implemented on our social media pages on Twitter (@FLYHSV) and Facebook (Facebook.com/HuntsivlleInternationalAirport).
