Average Fares for HSV Continue to Decline – Low-cost Carrier, AirTran, Yields Impact

According to the most recent Department of Transportation (DOT) data, fares at Huntsville International Airport (HSV) are on the decline for the second consecutive quarter. The 4th quarter 2010 data ranks HSV as number eight in terms of highest average airfare, a decrease from its ranking as the third highest for the previous quarter. While the national average fare increased 5.2%, Huntsville fares bucked the trend and decreased 13.3%. Equally significant, HSV was the only market to see a decrease in average fares year over year among the 24 markets with the highest fares. Since AirTran began service in HSV on May 27, 2010, fares among the airport’s top 20 markets have dropped by more than 20 percent, underscoring the impact a low-cost carrier can generate due to greater competition among the carriers. And with the recent approval of the Southwest-AirTran merger by the Department of Justice (DOJ), sustaining the Tennessee Valley’s low-cost carrier is more important than ever to position HSV for Southwest service. Baggage Claim Phase One Opening June 2011

After less than one year of construction, the first phase of the new baggage claim project will open during the month of June.  Passengers will be greeted with expanded rental car offices, Huntsville community mural, new tourism & information booth, two jumbotrons, and other numerous amenities that will add to the modern-day design. While passengers operate within the first phase of the project, phase two will be ongoing, including demolition of the existing bag claim and construction to tie in the terminal building to the new structure. Passenger Advisory:  Terminal Front, Parking Impacted by Construction

As phase two of baggage claim approaches, passengers and motorists traveling along the terminal front will notice some major changes. Traffic has been reconfigured while an overhead bridge is built, which will connect the ongoing baggage claim expansion to the completed parking deck addition. As well, a number of the 10-minute parking spaces along the terminal front have been captured to make room for construction, leaving a limited number of spaces.  Due to these temporary changes, the Airport Authority is offering 30 minutes free parking in the deck.  Motorists are encouraged to meet arriving passengers on the ground level of the parking deck for ease of pick-up and exit, thereby avoiding the terminal front construction zone all together. And we ask that you please use caution when traveling through the construction zone. The Airport Authority gave careful consideration during the construction planning process as to the best way to minimize the impact to passengers. We ask for your patience during this transitional period, and we look forward to unveiling the new baggage claim in its entirety during the summer of 2012. Click here for more construction photos.
