TSA Offers Helpful Tips for Labor Day Travelers

Preparation Is Key to Minimizing Frustration and Maximizing Safety and Enjoyment

Allow 90 minutes prior to flight time for checking in, checking baggage, and getting through security checkpoints at HSV

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., August 24, 2021 – Savvy end of summer travelers can enjoy a stress-free Labor Day journey by air to their vacation destination; that is, if they take to heart a handful of pointers from the Transportation Security Administration.

It is possible to minimize frustration and maximize safety and enjoyment over holiday travel plans, according to Sari Koshetz, TSA spokesperson.

The TSA reminds travelers that they should follow these six tips for getting through the TSA checkpoint as quickly and efficiently as possible:

Tip 1: Wear a face mask. You must. Face masks must be worn in the airport and on the plane.

Tip 2: Leave prohibited items at home. To reduce the likelihood of physical contact with TSA officers at the checkpoint, verify if items are prohibited by using the “What Can I Bring?” page on TSA.gov. Also empty your pockets of your wallet, coins, phone and other permitted items into your own carry-on, not into the trays in the checkpoint. That will reduce touchpoints as well.

Tip 3: Prepare for the security checkpoint. Have a valid ID card readily available. Follow the liquids rule of 3.4 ounces or less except for hand sanitizer, which has a temporary 12-ounce limit in carry-on baggage.

Tip 4: No guns at checkpoints ever. Airline passengers can fly with firearms but only in checked baggage. All firearms must be properly packed and declared to the airline at check-in. Contact your airline for additional guidance and know what the laws regarding firearms are on both sides of your trip.

Tip 5: Help is always available. Get live assistance by tweeting your questions and comments to @AskTSA or via Facebook Messenger, weekdays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. CST and weekends/holidays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST. You can also call the TSA Contact Center at 866-289-9673.

Tip 6: Enroll now in TSA PreCheck®. “Travel with Ease” by enrolling in TSA PreCheck and avoid removing shoes, belts, liquids, food, laptops and light jackets. Most new enrollees receive a known traveler number within five days, and membership lasts for five years. Huntsville International Airport offers a Global Enrollment Center where travelers may apply for Global Entry, which includes TSA PreCheck and international travel benefits. See flyhuntsville.com for information on creating an appointment or call 256.772.3404 ext 2000.

Huntsville International Airport staff recommend arriving no later than 90 minutes prior to flight time to allow for check-in at the airline counter, checking bags and getting through the TSA checkpoint.

“While air travelers enjoy convenient, shorter security checkpoint lines at HSV than they would experience at larger airports, it’s very important that they allow ample time to get through them,” said Barbie Peek, Business Development Director for Huntsville International Airport.
